Over 2,000 shell middens, or shell heaps, have been identified on the Maine coast, including several on the Schoodic Peninsula.  These features  are valuable archives of Indigenous culture, as well as records of past environmental conditions.  Many of these sites are disappearing in the face of sea level rise, increasing storm frequency and intensity, and more numerous freeze-thaw events.  The Midden Minders, a citizen science initiative, seeks to monitor these sites and document changes and information that can be saved.
