Historical Places

The Society maintains two historic buildings. The Gouldsboro Historical Society Headquarters building (formerly Gouldsboro United Methodist Church), houses our offices, the Blance Archive, and Young-Webber Hall where we hold meetings and host other events. The Old Town House was built in 1884 and houses our Museum. The West Gouldsboro Village Improvement Association (WGVIA), maintains its village green, the village Library, and is taking the lead in fundraising for the restoration of the Library and the West Gouldsboro Union Church.

There are many places that tell Gouldsboro’s story…

Ever wonder what Gouldsboro looked like 100 years ago? Our interactive Historical Places map can show you. It can take you on a “virtual walking tour, ca. 1920” of Gouldsboro’s villages and salt water farms, give you a view of summer homes and sardine factories, and show you the old schools and churches, many of them long gone. By 1920, Winter Harbor had become a separate town, so our tour is limited to the villages of Gouldsboro today. We are just getting started building our tour map, so we will be adding more images each month. We encourage you to take the tour often and offer your ideas for other places you would like to see. Send us your suggestions by completing the form below the map.

Map Handle

The easiest way to explore our map is to point to one of the icons and click.  A panel will open on the left that displays a photo, the name of the place, and a description (if we have one).  Close the panel by clicking on the map again (not on an icon).  At present, there are 6 different types of icons used on the map: Villages (used just for geographic reference); Village views; Houses and Buildings; Churches; Schools; Commerce and Industry. To see this list and the corresponding icons, click on the “handle” to the left of our white circle logo (in the black border at the top of the map). If you want to see fewer places displayed on the map, for example just schools, click on the handle and Unclick the red boxes next to the types of places that are NOT schools.  You can always get them back by reversing this process.
